FAQ

About the Cars

How fast is the car?

Very fast! TR-20 has a comparable power-to-weight ratio to a Ferrari 458 Italia, with an estimated 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds.

What kind of engine does it have?

Most of our cars run internal combustion engines, specifically from old motorcycles. All of our cars since 2014 use the engine from a Yamaha FZ6R!

What are the cars made out of?

We use components made out of aluminum, steel, carbon fiber, and fiberglass in all of our cars.

Who gets to drive?

All of our cars are driven by the students who build them. Specifically, anyone who is on the team for longer than three quarters is eligible to drive!

About the Team

Do you really not look for certain majors?

We're looking for driven and motivated people who will put in the hours and bring exciting new ideas to the table. As long as you're passionate about motorsport and want to contribute, we're absolutely not concerned with what your major is. There are plenty of opportunities for all majors!

Is past experience really not necessary?

Recruitment is tailored so that with the right effort, any person without experience could look just as good as or better than someone who has experience. We want people who will show up with a learning mindset!

What’s the time commitment like?

You get out of FSAE what you put in. We expect at minimum the ability to do at least 10 hours a week, but some in the past have spent over 20 hours a week working on the car!

Where and when is competition? Can I go?

The competition we attend is in Michigan, usually after or around finals week of Spring quarter. When dates are posted, we'll know more about the logistics of attending competition.

What do I do once I’m on the team?

New members are encouraged to attend all subgroup meetings they are interested in. Subgroups have tasks for new members to pick up, as well as opportunities for you to learn processes and skills. After some time on the team you should have an idea of what subgroups you gravitate towards and you’ll find your niche on the team.

Where are you located on campus?

We are located in EBU1/Jacobs Hall, room B110, near Warren College.

How can I join?

We typically recruit new members at the beginnings of Fall and Spring quarter. Join our Discord server, follow our social medias, and watch our website for updates about the upcoming recruitment cycle!
